Michael’s Story…

We don’t know what Michael did between his birth in 1889 and his departure for America in 1923.  What we do know is that on the passenger list, his calling or occupation is listed as joiner.

“A joiner is an artisan and tradesperson who builds things by joining pieces of wood, particularly lighter and more ornamental work than that done by a carpenter, including furniture and the “fittings” of a house, ship, etc.”

At some point before leaving for America, Michael moved to Hamburg.   Hamburg, a major port city in northern Germany, is connected to the North Sea by the Elbe River. It is crossed by hundreds of canals, and also contains large areas of parkland.  While in Hamburg, Michael lived with his friend, Michael Meyer, who lived at Amandastrasse 61 in Hamburg (see pic to the right).

On October 21, 1923, Michal boarded the SS Cleveland to sail to the US when he was 24.  Since his name is not listed on a list of Cabin guests for this voyage, we can assume that he was in second or third class.

Two days after Michael left Hamburg, the Hamburg uprising occurred.  If Michael hadn’t left when he did, he might have gotten caught up in the uprising.

The Hamburg Uprising was an insurrection during the Weimar Republic in Germany. It was started on 23 October 1923 by one of the most militant sections of the Hamburg district Communist Party (KPD), the KP Wasserkante. Rebels stormed 24 police stations, 17 in Hamburg and seven in Schleswig-Holstein Province in Prussia. Some 100 people died during the uprising.

ECOSYSTEM

Positive growth.

Nature, in the common sense, refers to essences unchanged by man; space, the air, the river, the leaf. Art is applied to the mixture of his will with the same things, as in a house, a canal, a statue, a picture.

But his operations taken together are so insignificant, a little chipping, baking, patching, and washing, that in an impression so grand as that of the world on the human mind, they do not vary the result.

The sun setting through a dense forest.
Wind turbines standing on a grassy plain, against a blue sky.
The sun shining over a ridge leading down into the shore. In the distance, a car drives down a road.

Undoubtedly we have no questions to ask which are unanswerable. We must trust the perfection of the creation so far, as to believe that whatever curiosity the order of things has awakened in our minds, the order of things can satisfy. Every man’s condition is a solution in hieroglyphic to those inquiries he would put.
